Hey there! And welcome!
I’m Jessica, a.k.a. Mrs. Smivie Farms and later on you’ll meet the boyfriend, Chuck, a.k.a. Mr. Smivie Farms. As well as all of our critters that live here on our ½ acre of dirt (and I literally mean dirt) in the middle of the Southern Nevada desert.
Smivie Farms is currently home to the two of us; a pit bull named Scooby; a kitten (that I’m not sure is truly a kitten); a snake named Flapjack; a tiny little gecko guy; three rats ( Pixie, Dixie, and Buster); 15 laying hens; two roosters (well a rooster and a Chuck-chuck); and my three potbelly pig girls Scarlet, Charlotte, and Petunia. It’s quite a menagerie of entertainment around here, and our neighbors can attest to that!
So, who exactly are we? We’re bikers, hobby farmers, small business owners, crafters, and DIY-ers (is that even a word?). We’ve survived stage three renal carcinoma, several surgeries, a now inoperable hernia as a result of cancer surgery, and now stage three kidney disease. We’ve had really high times, and we’ve had extremely low times, and we’ve had an amazing time along the way.
We’re currently on our hunt to find our “simple”. I’m a firm believer that everyone’s form of the “Simple Life” can be exactly what they want it to be. We have a desire to be modern day homesteaders. We want to rely more on ourselves than on stores, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that at all. Don’t get me wrong, we’ll always have some of the more modern amenities in our lives (running water, power even if solar, and some form of technology will always be there). Does that make us different than someone who lives completely off-grid? Well, duh, but we can still have the same wants and desires!
Living a debt free lifestyle, raising animals and gardens, learning new skills, cooking, Pinterest experiments, and creating things from scratch. Sound interesting? Then you’re in luck! So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!
OH! And just for future reference, we are a “farm” and in many cases we do raise animals that at some point will be used for our consumption. If this is something you have an issue with, then I beg you, please steer clear of posts tagged #consumption. All of our animals are treated with respect, and like family, even those that may eventually find their way into our freezer. Also, it’s not uncommon for me to use colorful language and analogies (sorry, that’s just me). If you find things like this offensive, than believe me, I do apologize but that’s just kinda how we roll around here!
Oh and HEY! While you’re here, over on the right hand side, see those little heart shaped buttons? There’s Pinterest, Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Give us a like and a follow over there too! Day to day pictures, crazy stores from the critters, and other happenings get posted on those almost daily as well! I’d love to have you join us!
